MIKO Mei Fair restaurant in London has the feel of a venue that knows exactly where it sits. It is polished, intimate, and very Mayfair. But it is not timid.
Set on Curzon Street, inside the Georgian townhouse also home to MiMi Mei Fair, MIKO Mei Fair is the latest opening from LSL Capital, the group behind restaurants including Jamavar, Bombay Bustle, MiMi Mei Fair and Nipotina. The idea is quite smart: a Thai restaurant shaped by the legacy of the now-closed KOYN Thai, but placed inside the more theatrical world of MiMi Mei Fair. It’s a hybrid between the two concepts, with Chef Soonthorn Apaipat, formerly Head Chef of KOYN Thai, leading the kitchen.
The room does a lot without shouting. There are just 50 seats, plus a private dining room for eight, so it keeps the feeling of a townhouse rather than a large restaurant operation. Teal and timber paneling, red leather banquettes, and warm brass accents give it that quietly expensive Mayfair look, but the scale helps it feel personal. It is a good room for a date. Also, for a table that wants to order widely and stay a while.
Fire is the point here. The restaurant describes itself as a contemporary Thai restaurant shaped by fire, flavour and the rhythm of the kitchen, with dishes designed for sharing. The robata grill at the heart of the kitchen brings smoke and depth to traditional dishes.
MIKO Mei Fair Restaurant London Menu
The menu works best when you let it build. Start bright, then go deeper.
The Tom Yum Prawn with spicy, hot-and-sour broth is an obvious first move, especially if you want that immediate Thai lift of heat and citrus. The Pomelo Salad with prawn and toasted coconut feels lighter, but no less interesting. Then comes the tableside larb, available as warm chicken salad or beef salad, mixed with chili powder, spring onion, shallot, mint, Thai parsley, lime juice, and fish sauce. It is the sort of dish that sets the pace for the table.
Small plates bring more texture. The Homemade Chiang Mai Sausage with northern spiced pork and prik noom is one to order early. So is the MIKO Prawn Toast with garlic, chili, coriander, and ajaad. The Black Pepper Crispy Squid with lemongrass and garlic sounds exactly like the kind of snack that disappears quickly. No ceremony. Just crunch, salt, and heat.
The grill gives the restaurant its weight. Chicken Satay comes with homemade cashew sauce, cucumber, and red onion vinegar, while the Grilled Pork Neck is served with Duke of Berkshire pork and nam jim jaew. The Beef Tenderloin Toasted Rice is more Mayfair in price and polish, but still rooted in chili, herbs, and that smoky Thai sourness.
Curries are the heart of the menu. The Yellow Crab Curry with blue swimmer crab and cha poo leaves is the luxury order. The 12-hour slow-cooked lamb shank massaman with cashew nuts and crispy shallots is the comfort order. But the cleverest dish may be the Panang Duck Curry, featuring MiMi’s signature apple-wood-fired roasted Peking duck with roti, a neat bridge between the townhouse’s Chinese and Thai identities.
MIKO Mei Fair does not flatten Thai cooking into something overly polite. It keeps the heat and the fragrance. It adds Mayfair polish without sacrificing flavor. Go with people who share properly. Order too much. That is the point.
