ALTA restaurant in London feels like a hidden chapter of the city’s dining story. Tucked into Carnaby Street, this live-fire restaurant channels the spirit of Northern Spain’s Navarra region. From the moment you arrive, you sense that food, design, and atmosphere all converge intentionally. The open grill glows, the plate smokes, and the city outside recedes.
This is the latest venture from the hospitality group behind MAD Restaurants. Chef Rob Roy Cameron—whose experience spans legendary kitchens like El Bulli and 41º—leads the menu at ALTA. The space itself opened in 2025 and carries a clear mission: to bring Basque-inspired open-fire cooking to London. The name ALTA references Alta Navarra—the mountainous north of Spain—and sets the tone for a kitchen rooted in flame, raw materials, and regional soul.
The interior feels deliberate yet welcoming. It spans two floors, with a private dining room above and a terrace overlooking Kingly Court. The design uses rough textures: exposed brick, wood, dark steel and softer banquettes. The open kitchen is a showpiece, with the grill at its heart. Lighting is dim but purposeful, casting the space in deep tones of amber, charcoal, and warm wood. The service complements this: friendly, smart, and tuned to the mood. The entire experience feels modern, unforced, and full of character.
ALTA Restaurant London Menu
ALTA’s menu turns British seasonal produce into dishes with Spanish soul. The menu is built for sharing—small plates, larger grill-led dishes, and a story of fire and flavour. Starters include razor clams in white saffron escabeche, or seabass crudo with red gooseberry. One standout dish: squid with lardo and vizcaína sauce—smoky, rich, and perfectly composed. For larger plates, the open-fire grill features 35-day-aged beef sirloin, whole sea bream, or hen-of-the-woods mushrooms for vegetarians. Sides and vegetable plates are given equal respect: courgette with pumpkin seed romesco, potato with mojo verde. Desserts include a Basque-style La Viña cheesecake with peach escabeche—a refined, playful finish. The drinks programme is also notable: artisan cocktails inspired by Spain, low-intervention wines, and ciders on tap.
