The Curtain home to both a private members club and hotel and is master of combining eccentric design with functional spaces. Each space offered by the Club integrates its ethos of creativity from the traffic light walls in the restaurant bathrooms to the mounted stag heads wearing blindfolds in the lobby. Potential members will not be short of creativity and a good time when at the Club. The Curtain club London is however, incredibly exclusive with its waiting list of more than 3,000 people and it comes as no surprise to us that this quirky members club is thriving in the creative Capital of London, Shoreditch.
Members of The Curtain have access to three different restaurants including Imperial, Red Rooster and the famous Rooftop restaurant LIDO. LIDO restaurant and pool is Moroccan-inspired and with its retractable glass roof, both members and hotel guests can bask in the sunshine in summer as well as watch the sun set on the city skyline in the evenings. Its open day-to-night serving fresh and seasonal dishes alongside a superb wine list.
Similar to the LIDO, Imperial is also exclusive to members. It is designed with an indoor garden immersing guests in a forest of vines, roses and fairly lights, and the centre of the room features an eccentric six-figure mural from the original Banksy in 2003. Imperial serves a similar menu to the LIDO and focuses on comfort food and lighter bites. The third restaurant available to members is the Red Rooster, headed by the legendary soul food chef, Marcus Samuelsson. He is an acclaimed New York chef that served as guest chef for Barack Obama’s first state dinner as president. This is the first Red Rooster outpost in London and is open to not only The Curtain members and hotel guests, but also to the public. It celebrates Southern soul food and one of the highlight dishes is his Sammy’s chicken ‘n’ waffles which is a Harlem-style fried chicken with pickles, hot honey and Rooster sauce. Red Rooster stays open until 2am from Thursday to Saturday with a programme of live music each night. Late night drinks are best spent with one of their savory and or sour signature cocktails and one of our favourites is the whisky & waffles with Johnnie Walker Black Label, Copper Dog, Bruichladdich, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino and waffles for £10.
The Curtain also has other perks for members, including Billy’s which is their designated space for evening night caps. It is legendary for its late-night parties and secret gigs and is one of East London’s best-kept secrets. Drinks come courtesy of Trash Tiki, the innovative ‘anti-waste punk pop-up’ company that recently showed at WastED. The Curtain club London also takes into consideration its members that need a place away from home and the office to work. It’s In Design studio is complete with co-working spaces, coffee, food and boardrooms that can seat up to 20. For members that need to unwind, they have a gym open 24 hours, as well as a spa offering multiple treatments including deep-tissue massages. Members also have access to the Club’s calendar events that range from intimate gigs with well-known celebrities, club nights to creative masterclasses.
What also typifies its uniqueness is that unlike most private members clubs, its membership is not restricted to recommendations by existing members. Instead, The Curtain selects members based on how well applicants will fit into its culture. For a joining fee of £250 and an annual rate of £1,000 The Curtain Club London is an ideal haven for people that have some sort of creative soul and a like-mindedness to share this passion with others.
