After 21 years of serving high-quality cuisine and earning two Michelin stars for 15 consecutive years,
The Square is considered a marvel in the Mayfair restaurant landscape. It all started with
Phillip Howards, co-owner of the popular Notting Hill, The Ledbury and Kitchen W8 in Kensington, and the humble idea to merge seasonal produce with modern French cooking techniques. The Square is no stranger to the tides of change, and recently re-opened under the umbrella of MARC, a restaurant group which includes the two Michelin star
The Greenhouse, Umu and the Private Members’ Club,
Morton’s.
The Square has always been a sleek temple of gastronomy and since the launch of its new concept it has only become chicer with its modern minimalism akin to gorgeous art galleries. The minimalistic architecture makes the room feel lofty and spacious. The Square restaurant London juxtaposes urban and contemporary design with a luxurious and opulent aesthetic. This style of art is reflected in its large-scale contemporary paintings adorning the walls which offer that modern touch against the antique statues and plush leather banquette seating. The dark hues of the walls are in stark contrast to the pristine white tableclothes evoking a haunting contrast between light and dark.
Art is celebrated in the restaurant design and also in the cuisine – which aims to evoke surprise and delight from guests. The minimalistic design is in keeping with the clean and stylish food preparation and presentation, curtesy of Head Chef, Clement Leroy. His style is a culmination of his experiences as Executive Chef at the famed Auberge du Jeu de Paume in Chantilly, as well as the three
Michelin-starred Guy Savoy in Paris. The menus are divided into set lunch, starter menu, tasting menu, main & desserts, wine and cocktail lists. The main menu is short but perfectly formed. The signature dishes celebrate food as art, and guests are implored to try the hand-picked Devon crab. This masterpiece is made with beetroot, iced coral and cardamom. Another dish that is of a praise-worthy standard is the lightly seared Orkney scallop marsala signature dish. It comes with a light garnish of hazelnut and green coffee bean. The John dory with celery, sea urchin and lychee is yet another outstanding signature dish which typifies the artistic flair with which all dishes are prepared. Attentive sommeliers are always on hand to help guests work through their list of over 2,500 internationally sourced wines that guests can choose from and pair with their delicious meals. There is also a vast array of beer and ciders; and premium vodka, gins and scotches among other spirits to enjoy. Champagnes pepper the drinks list, as well as delicious champagne cocktails. From Bellinis blended with White Beach Puree to classic Aperol Spritz. Classic vodka, rum and gin cocktails are also simply divine. For guests in need of a nightcap, their espresso martinis made with premium Grey Goose Vodka and shaken with creamy Kahlua and finished with a double espresso is the perfect remedy.
The Square restaurant London does private dining with the same level of flair as the rest of the restaurant. Striking artwork by
Oscar Murillo and
David Altmejd sets an elegant yet relaxed tone. The space is versatile and can be transformed to be an intimate space for business lunches as well as an elaborate room for hosted private parties. The room can accommodate up to 18 guests and offers a set menu with items focusing on high-quality, seasonal and modern food.
The Square restaurant London effortlessly blends into the art galleries that surround its illustrious location. Its refined yet inspiring interior, elegant ambience and artful food, showcase why it has been an institutional dining destination for over 20 years and why its future looks brighter than ever!
